“The Maharaja Blooms”, Banaras-based artist Anand steps away from the sacred stillness of divinities and enters a realm of playful surrealism — where royalty and nature become one.
Here stands a noble figure, dressed in resplendent saffron and violet regalia, posture regal, cane poised — yet his head is not that of a man, but a full-bloomed flower, lilac and flushed, swaying softly into the void. This is not a ruler of land or lineage, but of imagination. A botanical maharaja who wears poetry instead of a crown.
The orange achkan, adorned with Mughal motifs, flows with deliberate symmetry, while the richly detailed angarkha peeks beneath in tones of lavender, chestnut, and plum. Pearl strings grace his torso, adding old-world nobility. And yet, his head — a blooming anemone or perhaps a wild hibiscus — refuses to be contained by any frame, any identity.
What was Anand thinking?
Possibly that legacy can be whimsical. That even emperors bow to time and nature. That a mind unshackled by convention can bloom in the most unexpected forms.
